The Kansas Jayhawks made a late rally from a double-digit deficit, but just missed the +7 NCAA odds. Kentucky are the NCAA basketball national champions with a 67-59 win.

From the tip Monday night it was a track meet and the Jayhawks couldn’t keep up. The Wildcats jumped out to 10-plus lead early and led by as much as 18. And every time the Jayhawks made a run guard Doron Lamb would make a shot to take momentum back. The sophomore was 7 of 12 from the field and had a stretch where he dropped three 3 pointers from downtown in 38 seconds.

As for Naismith award winner Anthony Davis, the Wildcats forward finished with just six points on 1 of 10 shooting, but still dominated in other areas with 15 rebounds, six blocks and five assists. Davis’ six blocks are tied with former Florida Gator and current Chicago Bull Joakim Noah for most in the NCAA Championship Game.

The Jayhawks made a game of it late, getting the deficit down to five points with 1:11 remaining. But once the game was under a minute Kansas had to start fouling to stop the clock, building Kentucky’s lead back up to eight.

Wildcats coach John Calipari earns the first NCAA title of his coaching career.

PREVIEW: Kentucky is the favorite, loaded with next-level talent throughout the lineup – and even on the bench. Kansas is the surprise contender, the team that won its eighth consecutive regular-season conference title in what was supposed to be a “down” year. They both made it to New Orleans and survived hard-fought national semifinals to meet for the championship in a rematch of Kansas coach Bill Self and Kentucky coach John Calipari, whose Memphis team lost to Self’s Jayhawks in the 2008 title game. The title tilt will feature two of the nation’s best big men – and two finalists for the national player of the year award – in Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis and Kansas junior Thomas Robinson, as well as two of the best defensive teams in the country.

TV: 9:23 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Kentucky -6.

Kansas Jayhawks (32-6): The Jayhawks are in the national championship game for the eighth time – the first since 2008 – and this appearance might be their most unlikely since the group nicknamed “Danny and the Miracles” won it all as a No. 6 seed in 1988. Senior guard Tyshawn Taylor (16.5 ppg, 4.8 apg) was the only full-time starter returning for Self at the start of the season, and though it was apparent Robinson (17.7 ppg, 11.7 rpg) had the skills to develop into a dominant post presence, the rest of Kansas’ lineup was in flux. But 7-foot center Jeff Withey (9.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg) emerged as an excellent defender – with seven blocks against Ohio State on Saturday he has a school-record 136 this season – and juniors Elijah Johnson (10.1 ppg, 3.6 apg) and Travis Releford (8.6 ppg) have teamed with Taylor to become a dynamic backcourt group.

Kentucky Wildcats (37-2): College basketball’s all-time leader with 2,089 wins is in the national championship game for the 11th time, but amazingly the first since winning the title in 1998. The Wildcats showed they were beatable by losing the SEC tournament title game to Vanderbilt, but they’ve looked anything but through five games in the NCAA tournament. Saturday’s 69-61 win over Louisville was Kentucky’s closest test yet, but it was never really in doubt despite swingman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist playing only 23 minutes because of foul trouble and the Cardinals owning a surprising 40-33 rebounding edge. The freshman phenom Davis led the way with 18 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Davis needs two blocks to match the national freshman record of 182 set by Marshall’s Hassan Whiteside in 2010.

1. With 26 double-doubles, Robinson leads the nation and has surpassed Drew Gooden for the Kansas single-season record. With 20 double-doubles, Davis has matched DeMarcus Cousins for the Kentucky freshman record.

2. Johnson had 13 points and 10 rebounds against Ohio State for his first career double-double. He scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, helping Kansas rally from a 13-point first-half deficit.

3. Kansas has led at halftime in only one of its five games in the tournament. The Jayhawks rallied from halftime deficits against Ohio State, N.C. State and Purdue and was tied at half against North Carolina. Kentucky is 31-0 when leading at halftime.

March Madness Final Four Betting: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 2 Kansas

The nightcap of Saturday’s Final Four in New Orleans also is a rematch of a regular-season matchup as Ohio State and Kansas face off for a spot in Monday’s title game. KU hasn’t reached the final game since winning it all in 2008. OSU hasn’t been there since losing the 2007 national title game to Florida. Ohio State is a 2.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.

The Buckeyes knocked off 1-seed Syracuse in the Elite Eight as All-American big man Jared Sullinger took advantage of Fab Melo’s absence to finish with 19 points and seven rebounds. His 27 free throws are the most among any player in the field. Sullinger leads the Buckeyes in scoring (17.6) and rebounding (9.1). Deshaun Thomas has blossomed in the postseason, too. His 14-point, nine-rebound effort (6-for-14) against the Orange was his worst game in the NCAA tournament. And OSU has one of the nation’s top perimeter defenders in point guard Aaron Craft.

The Jayhawks have the national player of the year runner-up in Thomas Robinson, who has a school-record 26 double-doubles this season and was the Big 12 Player of the Year. But he’s far from alone. Center Jeff Withey has become one of the top interior defenders in America (3.5 blocks per game; 20 in four NCAA tourney games). Point guard Tyshawn Taylor (16.6 ppg) recorded 22 points, six rebounds and five assists in the 80-67 Elite Eight win against North Carolina. Elijah Johnson has scored in double digits in all four tourney games and dished out five assists against the Heels.

Withey has a higher block rate (15.14 percent, according to Ken Pomeroy) than Kentucky’s Anthony Davis (13.95). But whom will the 7-footer guard on the Buckeyes roster? Jayhawks coach Bill Self could put Withey on Sullinger. But Robinson is a better fit for the task. If KU coach Bill Self chooses the latter matchup, however, what will he do with the versatile Thomas? . In seven postseason games (including Big Ten Tournament), Thomas is averaging 20.3 points and shooting 54 percent from the field.

Back on Dec. 10 in Lawrence, Kansas beat Ohio State 78-67, but OSU didn’t have Sullinger due to injury. Taylor had a career-high 13 assists for KU but Taylor committed seven turnovers. Craft forced six of them. Robinson took advantage of Sullinger’s absence inside to score 21 points. William Buford had 17 of his 21 points in the second half for Ohio State, while Thomas added 19 points. It was KU’s fourth straight win over OSU, but the schools hadn’t played previously in 11 seasons.

OSU Road to Final Four: beat No. 15 Loyola (Md.) 78-59; No. 7 Gonzaga 73-66; No. 6 Cincinnati 81-66; No. 1 Syracuse 77-70.

March Madness Final Four Betting: No. 4 Louisville vs. No. 1 Kentucky

It’s the biggest game in the history of the basketball-crazy Commonwealth of Kentucky as Louisville and Kentucky face off in the Final Four for the first time in that rivalry’s storied history on Saturday night in New Orleans. Kentucky, the overall favorite to win the national title and only No. 1 seed remaining, is an 8.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.

Of course UK and U of L, schools separated by about 75 miles, play during the regular season every year, but this will be the first time they have met in the Big Dance since 1984 and first time ever this deep in the tournament. And of course it’s a personal rivalry between Kentucky coach John Calipari and Louisville’s Rick Pitino. Of course Pitino rebuilt the UK program back in the mid-1990s, leading the Cats to the 1996 national title. And Pitino was Calipari’s mentor, helping him land his first major head coaching job at UMass, Pitino’s alma mater. But the relationship between the two is now frosty at best.

Coach Cal has beaten Pitino all three times since Calipari arrived in Lexington. When these two schools met on New Year’s Eve in Lexington, the Cats won 69-62 as freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had season-highs with 24 points and 19 rebounds. Fellow freshman Anthony Davis added 18 points, all in the second half, as well as 10 rebounds and six blocks.

The Cardinals only led at 2-0, but gave Kentucky all it could handle after rallying from an early 15-point deficit before tying it in the second half thanks to Russ Smith, who had a career-high 30 points. No other Cardinals had more than eight points.

Kentucky owns a 29-14 record in the all-time series and has won six of the last eight against Louisville including three straight. This is the sixth post-season meeting between the teams and the first since the 1984 NCAA Tournament.

The series began in 1913 with UK winning seven of the first nine contests. The teams then met three times in the NCAA Tournament between 1948-59. After a 24-year absence, the series was renewed at the 1983 NCAA Mideast Region title game in Knoxville, with Louisville winning the “Dream Game,” 80-68 in overtime to advance to the Final Four.

Calipari is 9-5 versus Louisville. U of L head coach Rick Pitino is 4-7 against the Cats. Pitino was 6-2 against the Cards while coaching at Kentucky.

National Championship odds: Louisville Beats Odds, But Kentucky Headed to Title Game

Despite all the stories of them hating each other, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said he conratulated John Calipari on his win and wished him luck in the national championship game.
“I just said John, `I’ll be pulling for you, bring the trophy back home to Kentucky,” Pitino said. “Sometimes there’s a lot of talk about these guys fighting, dialysis, there’s also really a lot of people that get along. … For those that have brains, they root for each other.”
“We like their basketball team; we hope they bring it home for the state.”
Louisville outrebounded Kentucky 40-33, including a whopping 19-6 advantage on the offensive glass — but they couldn’t slow down the size and athleticism of Davis. His wingspan made every shot difficult around the basket, Louisville shot 35 percent from the field compared to Kentucky’s 57 percent.
“I’m proud of this team. They’re coming together,” Calipari said. “They’ve taken on shots and runs like Louisville did today, and they’ve held their own, so I’m proud of them.”
The Wildcats will likely be favored in the national championship game, however, the odds may be closer than bettors think. The Wildcats were out-hustled for stretches Saturday; an upset versus a team many bet on in NCAA futures is possible.

PREVIEW: Something was missing when Kansas beat then-No. 2 Ohio State on Dec. 10 at Allen Fieldhouse — namely Buckeyes star Jared Sullinger — but both teams will be at full strength for the rematch Saturday in New Orleans. Sullinger and teammate Deshaun Thomas will clash with Kansas star Thomas Robinson and 7-footer Jeff Withey in a matchup of two of the nation’s top frontcourt duos.

Ohio State Buckeyes (31-7): The Buckeyes are in their 10th Final Four and are seeking their second title — and their first since 1960 — after a 77-70 win over No. 1 seed Syracuse on Saturday. They’re certainly peaking at the right time to win it. After losing three of five during a rough stretch in February, the Buckeyes have won eight of nine, with the loss coming in the Big Ten tournament final against Michigan State. Five Buckeyes have averaged double-digits in the tournament, led by Thomas’ 21.8 points to go with 8.5 rebounds per game.


Kansas Jayhawks (31-6): The Jayhawks advanced to their 14th Final Four with an 80-67 win over No. 1 seed North Carolina on Sunday. It’s the Jayhawks’ second trip to the Final Four under coach Bill Self, who led them to the 2008 national title. Robinson led the Jayhawks with 21 points and seven rebounds in the first meeting, but he almost certainly will see a different defensive look from the Buckeyes with Sullinger in the lineup. Perhaps more important to the Jayhawks, though, is whether senior point guard Tyshawn Taylor can give a more consistent performance than in the first meeting — he had nine points and 13 assists, but also seven turnovers, in the victory in December.

Louisville Cardinals (30-9): The Cardinals lost four of their final six games entering the Big East tournament and battled injuries all season long. So how did Louisville win the conference title and then slay top-seed Michigan State and Florida on its way to New Orleans? Start with defense. The Cardinals have allowed just 56.3 points during their winning streak, and smothered Florida with a 23-8 surge in the final 10 minutes of the West Regional final on Saturday. The Cardinals rank third nationally in 3-point field-goal percentage defense (38.0 percent) and seventh in steals (8.9). But can Louisville play well enough on offense to stay close to Kentucky? The Cardinals shoot just 42.5 percent from the field (220th in the nation). Sophomore Russ Smith led the Cardinals with 19 points in the regional final, and Louisville got 17 points from freshman Chane Behanan, the West Regional’s most outstanding player.

Kentucky Wildcats (36-2): In their first four NCAA games, the Wildcats showed both the ability to completely take control with dominant stretches against Western Kentucky, Iowa State and Baylor, and the toughness to hold a stubborn Indiana just out of striking distance. The Wildcats’ balanced attack has shined in the tournament. Freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist earned most outstanding player honors of the South Regional after scoring 43 points in his past two games. Kentucky shot 80.2 percent from the free-throw line in its past two games (65-for-81), and continues to make life tough on opposing offenses with its strong interior defense (six blocks by freshman Anthony Davis against Baylor). Kentucky leads the nation in blocked shots (8.6) and field-goal percentage defense (37.5 percent).
